Synopsis: School House Rock Live! Jr. is based
on the Emmy Award-winning 1970's and 1980's Saturday morning cartoon series on
ABC-TV that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever,
tuneful songs.
Tom is a nervous teacher preparing for his first day of school. While trying to
prepare his lesson and calm his nerves, different parts of his personality climb
out of his TV to remind him how to make learning fun with songs such as
“Conjunction, Junction”, “Unpack your Adjectives” and “Interplanet Janet”.

30-40 roles for actors in 3rd-8th Grade.
We are looking for actors with huge imaginations
who will try anything and have fun while doing it.

The Crucible
by Arthur Miller
Director: Wanda Morales
Synopsis: The Crucible,
is dramatic piece. The place is Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, after accusations
from a few girls, which begins a mad hunt for witches that did not exist. A
group of girls go dancing in the forest with a black slave named Tituba. While
dancing, they are caught by the local minister, Reverend Parris. One of the
girls, Parris’s daughter Betty, falls into a coma-like state. A crowd gathers in
the Parris home while rumors of witchcraft fill the town. This opening scene
ignites the mass hysteria in the town. Arthur Miller did not write it as a
historical piece, but is based on historical events. Miller wrote The Crucible
in 1953 during the McCarthy period when Americans were accusing each other of
Pro-Communist beliefs.
Casting
Cast Size:
21 roles for actors in 9th-12th Grade.
Roles
Parris: A minister in
Salem who is more worried about his own reputation than the town or the truth.
Betty: Parris’ daughter.
She is faint in the beginning of the play and later accuses various people for
witchcraft.
Abigail: Parris’ niece
and Proctor’s mistress. She is the leader of the girls who accuses people of
witchcraft during the trial.
Tituba: Parris’ slave
from Barbados. She is the first person accused by Abigail.
Mrs. Putnam: Wife of
Thomas Putnam. She first plants the idea of Betty being bewitched.
Ruth: Daughter of the
Putnams. She is one of Abigail's friends who accuses people at the trial.
Mercy Lewis: Putnams’
servant. She is also involved in the accusations of the witches.
John Proctor: Main
character. He is a good man, but has committed adultery with Abigail.
Elizabeth Proctor: John
Proctor’s wife. She is an upright woman who is accused of being a witch. She
couldn’t forgive Proctor for adultery until just before he died.
Mary Warren: Proctor’s
servant. She is one of Abigail’s friends and plants evidence on Elizabeth.
Reverend Hale: Self
proclaimed expert on witchcraft. He is a minister who at first believes the
girls accusations but eventually sees the evil in the court.
Deputy Governor Dansforth:
Deputy Governor of Massachusetts who believes the testimony of the girls despite
evidence to the contrary. He works more to keep the reputation of the court than
to seek justice.
Judge Hathorne: Judge
presiding over the witch trials.
Rebecca Nurse: Respected,
upright wife of Francis nurse. She is accused of witchcraft.
Francis Nurse: Rebecca’s
Husband. He had land disputes with the Putnams.
Giles Corey: Old cranky
villager who accidentally causes his wife to be accused.
Sarah Good: She is an
accused witch who becomes insane while awaiting her hanging.
Susanna: One of Abigail’s
friends who takes part in accusing the villagers.
Ruth: Daughter of the
Putnams. She is one of Abigail's friends who accuses people at the trial.
Cheever: He arrests the
witches.
Herrick: He also arrests
the witches. He is the jail keeper.
Hopkins: A messenger.

Big Love

Synopsis:
Fifty brides flee their fifty grooms and seek refuge in a villa on the coast
of Italy. When the grooms catch up with their brides, mayhem ensues. Finally,
unable to escape their forced marriages; 49 of the brides murder 49 of the
grooms - and one bride falls in love. A modern farce for modern times.

Violet

Based on "The Ugliest Pilgrim" by Doris Betts
Director: Sarah Butts
Synopsis: Violet is a musical based on the story The
Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts. The musical takes place in 1964 at the
beginning of the civil rights movement and tells the story of Violet, a young
broken hearted girl in her 20’s who was seriously disfigured as a child due to
an accident caused by her father. Feeling ugly and unlovable she leaves her home
town in North Carolina and sets out on a journey to Tulsa Oklahoma to visit a
television evangelist who she believes can heal her physical scar. On her
journey Violet encounters a number of people who teach her about the true
meaning of beauty and love.

Ensemble Cast. Many featured roles, ethnic roles, one lead role for a
female, age 12-18.

Note: Age ranges for characters below are only
approximate.
Violet: Mezzo(belt).
(Age range 20's.) A girl from North Carolina who is setting out on a bus
to Oklahoma in the hopes of healing her disfigured face.
Young Vi: Mezzo Soprano.
(Age range 12-18.) Violet as a younger girl.
Father: Baritone.
(Age range 30-50.) Violet’s father. A kind and hard working man who loves
his daughter, but carry’s a lot of guilt for being the one who accidently caused
her scar.
Monty: Tenor. (Age
range 20's.) A soldier that Violet meets on her journey. He is attractive
and knows it and a womanizer.
Flick: Baritone.
(Age range 20's.) A black soldier that Violet meets on her journey. He
encounters a great deal of discrimination from people throughout the show.
Preacher: Tenor.
(Age range 30-50.) A highly charismatic evangelist preacher who, Violet
hopes, will heal her face.
*Ensemble: Various.
(Age range 13-60+.) There are a wide range of character roles to be played
by the ensemble. The ensemble members will play different roles throughout the
show, including:

Young Vi knew when she was growing up.

Audition Expectations and Preparation: Please prepare one
verse and a chorus of a song to be done with piano accompaniment or recorded
Karaoke or instrumental rack. Violet encompasses a wide range of musical styles
ranging from Gospel, classic Rock and Roll, folk, and bluegrass.
Your audition song should encompass one of these styles and does not necessarily
have to be from a musical. Piano accompanist and CD player will be provided.
Please bring clearly marked sheet music if you intend to sing with live
accompanist.
I recommend that you read the play and be familiar with the music.
Limited copies of the script are available at the theatre & may be borrowed for
a limited time.
Note: Auditions will be closed, meaning one person will be in the audition room
at a time.
Note about accent: Most of the characters in the show are
from the South, many of them specifically from North Carolina and Oklahoma. It
is recommended that you come prepared to speak in an understandable Southern
accent.
What to expect from callbacks: Selected readings and
musical cuts of the play will be used for the callbacks. I recommend that you
read the play and be familiar with the music. Limited copies of the script are
available at the theatre & may be borrowed for a limited time.
