The Castaways...
Youth Conservatory
Past Production - February 2009
Adapted by
Directed by Sarah Butts
In the years prior to coordinated social services, many
poor families found it impossible to support and shelter all of their children.
Some of these children were either abandoned or chose to leave the family
setting for what they hoped would be a better life on the streets. The hardships
and ordeals experienced by these homeless castaways forms the basis of this
story.
The cast and crew of Castaways wanted not just to
entertain, but also to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless with this
show. They raised money to donate to
Tumbleweed, a not-for-profit organization that provides services to runaway,
homeless, and otherwise at-risk youth and their families. They included
the following information about homelessness in the program:
-
An Estimated 1,350,000 kids are homeless in a given year.
-
Families with children are the fastest growing segment in
the homeless population.
-
It is estimated that 2000 people are homeless in the
Billings area per year.
-
Billings Public Schools has identified 302 homeless
students so far this year. Last school year there were a total of 381 for
the entire year.
-
42% of these homeless children are under the age of 6.
-
Nationally, school districts are seeing an increase of
25% in the number of homeless students identified.
-
Families with children are the fastest growing segment in
the homeless population.
-
It is a common misconception that all panhandlers are
homeless. Many are not and not all homeless panhandle.
