Director's Notes:  My brother doesn't like theatre. It's not a weakness in his character. It's a general weakness in theatre. Theatre doesn't stir his blood, doesn't tap his passion. That's fine. Theatre's not for everybody, particularly lukewarm theatre.

Strange, then, that Lonely Planet is his favorite play. He saw it the first time we did it with Mel Moser and Todd Yeager. And it's particularly peculiar, since Lonely Planet doesn't have a great deal of spectacle. It doesn't have a great mystery to reveal. Nor does it have any slapstick comedy.

Furthermore, my brother is not gay, so he's not identifying on that level. I don't think he knows anyone who has contracted HIV, either. He's not a "map-geek." Sometimes when I talk to him, I'm not sure he understands why I think theatre is so important.

What he does understand is the bond between men and brothers. He knows that it strains, but once it's there it's unbreakable. And so a little play that is so soft and so beautiful can become my brother's -- the caveman's -- favorite piece of theatre.

Lonely Planet was one of our early achievements, and I am so happy to have a chance to restage it with resources that we never would have dreamed of back in the day. I am proud of these two men who perform for you tonight. Their bond with each other and with this play is very strong, unbreakable.
