The Tony Award-Winning satirical musical comedy that pans
capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate
mismanagement, and petty small town politics. It also is a satire of the
Broadway musical as a form.
Director's Notes: Urinetown: The
Musical premiered at The Fringe in 1999 and from there it began its steady
assent to Tony-Award winner in 2002. Urinetown is that rare commodity
in a Broadway musical; it is fully original. Its plot doesn't come from a film,
movie, book, or previously produced piece of theatre, and it contains all new
songs. On a Great White Way that is full of revivals and stage versions of
popular movies and Disney cartoons, "Hail, Malthus*" for a new voice for the
musical stage.
And although Urinetown is an original show, it
sometimes seems lifted, since it parodies so many famous Broadway musicals.
Watch for the following references in this clever collection of spoofs:
Three Penny Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, Gilbert and
Sullivan, Cats, Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Busby Berkley movie
musicals, Sweeny Todd.
* Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834): Malthus posited
the hypothesis that unchecked population growth always exceeds the growth of the
means of subsistence. Because of this tendency, any attempt to ameliorate the
condition of the lower classes by increasing their incomes or improving
agricultural productivity would be fruitless, as the extra means of subsistence
would be completely absorbed by an induced boost in population.
