Reverse Psychology...
Past Production - February 1996
by Charles Ludlam
Directed by Michele Schindele
A bawdy comedy that sends up the craft of bedroom farce.
Director's Notes: It became readily apparent, when
the cast and I began to tackle this play, that there was more than met the
proverbial eye. Our mission, we soon acknowledged, was to explore a zany and
wonderful world, where there was no definition for normality. Not only were
we beset with the task of demolishing a modern form of comedy, but we were
pressed to explore the dichotomies of the world we lived in and then to
reconstruct something that still entertained.
Don't let the camp and physical humor fool you. There are strong political
and moralistic questions hidden in this salute to "ridiculous" theatre,
where Ludlam sends up the profession of psychiatry, shakes the foundations
of marriage, religion, and procreation, and even turns the finger back upon
himself and the world of theatre. In fact, Ludlam takes plenty of liberty in
posing the artist's dilemma, through the eyes of Freddie. with the freedom
of ideas, is there a responsibility for actions, or do artists simply
challenge the status quo and disturb the established order? Is man caught in
a struggle between embracing hypocrisy or stripping away the pretenses that
we encounter on a daily basis?
Charles Ludlam founded the Ridiculous Theatrical Company in 1967, and over
the course of 22 years, wrote 30 plays before his death from AIDS in 1987 at
the age of 44. His New York based ensemble dedicated itself to exposing the
conventions at the heart of all forms of theatre.
We invite you to enjoy an entertaining and enlightening romp through our
looking glass where black is white, and white is any color you want it to
be.
